This study led by CEPS examined the economic situation of the EU furniture market. It assessed the need for and added value of improved information on furniture products to consumers in view of the overall objective of raising industrial competitiveness. The research analysed whether a possible initiative on furniture products (aimed at increasing awareness among end-users regarding the quality and origin of products) could respond to some of the main challenges currently affecting the EU sector, including the following: harmonisation of rules, access to sustainably sourced raw materials, cost and complications of harvesting wood in the EU, price increases driven by competing demand, comparatively higher energy costs in the EU and a more complex and demanding policy environment. CSIL covered topics as the global scenario, EU competitiveness analysis, value chain analysis, demand drivers and purchasing patterns description, factors affecting pricing and an overview of the retailing system. The study outlined and evaluated possible policy options to tackle the identified problems, improve market transparency, and increase consumer awareness in decision-making when buying furniture products.
